Character Focus Tuesday

When deciding what I wanted to do today to entertain anyone who might be reading this, I considered what I would be interested to read. After much deliberation, I decided to go for a post about a character. I think I'll pick a different one every week, whether it be from a TV series, a book or a film. For my first week, I've picked someone a little off the wall, who features in one of my favourite films:
Rick O'Connell
Featuring in the Mummy movies released between 1999 and 2008, Rick O'Connell is one of a group of 1920s heroes who fight, you've guessed it, mummies. Played by Brendan Fraser as a real human, and voiced by John Schneider as an animated character, Rick's overriding personality trait is that of loyalty. No matter what he says, he will always do what is best for those he loves, ranging from his wife Evy to his irritating brother-in-law Jonathon.

Ever since I saw the first Mummy movie, I've loved the series (except maybe the third movie - that was a little rubbish). One of my major reasons for loving it was always Rick. He's so blunt, pretty damn funny, and reacts in a reasonable way to a pretty unreasonable situation. Also, his little catch phrase of 'I hate mummies' really makes the series.

Any other Rick lovers out there? Let me know!

Mulling on Monday

Mondays are always rubbish, aren't they? Unless you have something properly good to look forward too, everything is just a bit meh.
I, for one, have a free period every Monday morning. While I should be using this time to revise or work, I usually use it to consider the world. To ponder life's mysteries. To mull.

Today, I was considering Tumblr.

I've been a member of Tumblr for about six months, and so far, I love it. I love the people, and how there is always someone out there willing to talk to you about pretty much anything. I love how suddenly things that I love which are considered 'weird' among my friends are completely acceptable. I love that moment when you develop a mutual understanding and respect for somebody you've never met before.

My best friend and I just got to that ultimate stage of friendship where we shared Tumblr URLs. Now, we can see what the other one does, no matter how weird. We can see every fandom that the other one belongs to. Every post she makes comes straight to me, and likewise me to her. Should this worry me? I don't think so. We trust each other in real life, so why not in cyberspace?

I was sitting in my school library, considering a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch she had reblogged, when suddenly I thought of something. How many of the people around me are on Tumblr? Do I follow any of them? Do any of them follow me? What do they do? Do we share fandoms?

This really got me thinking. We chat to people online, and we chat to people in real life. These people aren't meant to cross over, not really. There are the ones we know and speak to on Facebook, and the ones we don't know and speak to on Tumblr. But, how weird would it be if one of the people I just happen to speak to in a hallway, or am randomly assigned to sit next to in assembly, is someone who I chat to regularly on a social networking platform?

And, really, are they better, more suitable friends for me than my actual friends, who I only just felt comfortable with sharing my URL with? I mean, the people of Tumblr know my fandoms, understand my weirdness. I'm not afraid to tell them something I think, because we think in a pretty similar way. Maybe my real friends don't actually know me as well.

What do you think?

#Huh?

I love looking at the hashtags that you're meant to use while watching TV.
My personal favourites are the Teen Wolf ones.
Every single joke has its own hashtag.

Sunday Suggestions

Here we have it, people. My first 'regular' slot.
Let us call it, SUNDAY SUGGESTIONS.
(I hope that my use of enhanced text features has made you read that in a rather dramatic fashion)
And so, without further ado... My first suggestion.
In the form of a book.

This is Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Generally thought of as one of those Emperor's New Clothes books that everybody proclaims to love but actually just doesn't want to break away from the crowd by giving a differing opinion, DoSaB is actually, in my opinion, really quite the diamond in the rough.

Set in modern day Prague, DoSaB tells the story of Karou, a girl with more secrets than tattoos (and that's a lot, by the way). She lives a double life, spending half her time in Art School with her human best friend, and half her time at the office of a group of demons, sorting teeth. The only way she can tell one world about the other is by drawing - her favourite means of communication.

Lots of people call this a slightly failed young adult romance, however I believe that it is actually just a young adult action story that has a small aspect of romance. The Romeo to Karou's Juliet in this particular story is Akiva, a member of a race of angels whose single purpose in life is the destruction of the demons who play the part of Akiva's family.

Sound a little like a rehashing of a story you've heard a million times before? Maybe as far as the romance goes. However, it is really worth a read if only for the amazing world that Taylor creates, filled with demons, angels and cupcake-loving Czechs.

So go on, give it a go!

Compulsory opener

Whoever you are, wherever you are, welcome to my blog!
Thank you so much for dropping by, for whatever reason you decided to.
As you may have guessed, this blog is rather...new. And, like the chick just hatched from its egg, it is a little small, a little weak, and a little unprepared for the world.

Don't worry people. I'm working on it.
