Sunday Suggestions

Here we have it, people. My first 'regular' slot.
Let us call it, SUNDAY SUGGESTIONS.
(I hope that my use of enhanced text features has made you read that in a rather dramatic fashion)
And so, without further ado... My first suggestion.
In the form of a book.

This is Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Generally thought of as one of those Emperor's New Clothes books that everybody proclaims to love but actually just doesn't want to break away from the crowd by giving a differing opinion, DoSaB is actually, in my opinion, really quite the diamond in the rough.

Set in modern day Prague, DoSaB tells the story of Karou, a girl with more secrets than tattoos (and that's a lot, by the way). She lives a double life, spending half her time in Art School with her human best friend, and half her time at the office of a group of demons, sorting teeth. The only way she can tell one world about the other is by drawing - her favourite means of communication.

Lots of people call this a slightly failed young adult romance, however I believe that it is actually just a young adult action story that has a small aspect of romance. The Romeo to Karou's Juliet in this particular story is Akiva, a member of a race of angels whose single purpose in life is the destruction of the demons who play the part of Akiva's family.

Sound a little like a rehashing of a story you've heard a million times before? Maybe as far as the romance goes. However, it is really worth a read if only for the amazing world that Taylor creates, filled with demons, angels and cupcake-loving Czechs.

So go on, give it a go!
